A brief history:


School of Allied Medical Sciences (Paramedical Sciences) located in Pardis-e Nazlou on the 11th kilometer of Serow road in Urmia, Iran. The School was established in 1986 in order to train expert professionals in paramedical sciences. We believe that in the field of biomedical sciences, there's always something new to discover. Our courses therefore have an emphasis on practical work. Our aim is to train the students with the highest standards in knowledge and skill. We offer the following programs as bachelor degrees in different fields of studies:
• Clinical laboratory sciences
• Health information technology
• Medical imaging
• Anesthesia
• Surgical technology

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences


Laboratory medicine applies scientific investigations to diagnose, treat and better understanding of disease processes. It's estimated that up to 70% of clinical decisions are based on the information provided by medical scientists.
Medical laboratory scientists, also called medical technologists, are highly trained health care professionals who perform hundreds of different types of tests critical to the diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of disease. Medical laboratory scientists work in clinical laboratories at hospitals, doctor's offices, reference labs, biotechnology labs and non-clinical industrial labs.
Medical Laboratory Scientists assist doctors and nurses in choosing the correct lab tests and ensure proper specimen collection methods. Medical Laboratory Scientists then receive the patient specimens, analyze the specimens, interpret and report results. As a graduate of the laboratory medicine program, you'll be qualified as a medical scientist and play a vital role in the healthcare system.
In Iran, a medical laboratory scientist (MLS) typically earns a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science in which case certification from an accredited training program is also required. In most four-year medical laboratory degree programs, the student attends classroom courses for three years and clinical rotations are completed in their final year of study. In clinical rotations, the student experiences hands-on learning in each discipline of the laboratory and, under supervision, performs diagnostic testing in a functioning laboratory. With limited compensation, a student in the clinical phase of training usually works 40 hours per week for 20 to 52 weeks, experiencing work as a full-time employee
.

Department of Health Information Technology (HIT)


Health Information Technology (HIT) is a discipline at the intersection of information science, computer science, and health care. It provides the umbrella framework to describe the comprehensive management of health information across computerized systems and its secure exchange between consumers, providers, government and quality entities, and insurers. The mission of the department teaches how to use technology to collect, analyze, monitor, maintain and report health data. HIT tools include computers, clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, and information and communication systems. It is applied to the areas of nursing, clinical care, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, occupational therapy, physical therapy and (bio) medical research.

Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences


Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences is one of the 5 departments comprising the School of Paramedical (Allied Sciences) of Urmia University of Medical Sciences. Since its foundation in 1986, the Department has trained and educated Technology Radiology in B.Sc. level. Department offers a 4 year degree program that summarize all the requirements to become an accredited radiographer.
Radiographers are health professionals who facilitate patient diagnosis and management through the creation of medical images using X-rays and magnetic resonance. They play an important role in selecting and implementing the most appropriate examination protocols which will answer the clinical question.
Members of the Department also carry out high quality researchers on Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. Current interests include: research in various fields of medical imaging, radiation dosimetry, and radiation therapy, Monte Carlo simulation in medical physics, radiobiology and radiation protection.

Department of Surgical Technology


Bachelor's degree programs in surgical technology prepare students for careers as surgical technologists who assist surgeons and nurses during operations. Surgical technologists, also called operating room technicians, usually work in an operating room. Common duties include prepare to provide patient care before, during, and after surgery in the high-tech operating room (OR).
ü Set up surgical instruments and equipment
ü Help maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients undergoing surgery
ü Transport patients pre-op and post-op
ü Prepare and handle instruments during surgical procedures
Department offers a 4 year degree program that summarize all the requirements to become a Surgical technologist. As a student in Department of surgical technology, you'll learn common operating room procedures and how to work under high-pressure situations so you can have a positive impact on patients. You'll study anatomy, physiology, and surgical procedures and techniques, and develop your professional and patient interaction skills. Students get valuable, hands-on experience working in our skill labs and during surgical technologist externships in real-world healthcare environments.

Department of Nurse Anesthesia (Faculty of Paramedical Sciences)


Bachelor of Anesthesia is a four year under graduate program and aims to teach students to observe and learn all modalities of patient care in the operation room, in the intensive care units and in CPR. Anesthesia students are aimed to learn new principles, methods from several specialties such cardiac anesthesia, transplantation anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia and so on. Anesthesia technician helps the anesthesiologist in the operating room; therefore they must be very skilled.
Since the anesthesia technician's job is a full time dedicated job and requires intense and dedicated training, they must be able to:
- Care for the anesthetized, unconscious, recovering patient and pickup warning signals clinically by observing the monitors and alert the physician/surgeon.
- Interpret pulse oxymeter readings, perform blood gas analysis and interpret the same for consultation of experts.
- Provide ongoing care during the recovery phase at the recovery room from the technological point of view.
- Maintain, troubleshoot and be prepared to work with the anesthesia machine all the time especially for pain control.
- Know enough about infection control and self protection.
- Know enough about ventilator management, setting, maintaining and weaning processes.
- Know all principles of safety of patients at every stage during transportation and in various positions.
